DescriptionTitle: Harmony of Blue Year Completed: 1993 Size: H63” × W85” / H160 cm × W216 cm Material: old cotton (including aizome, sarasa, old Indonesian batik), new cotton (American hand-dyed, Indian) Statement: The design was inspired by the three-dimensional lattice which supports the famous open-air stage of the Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto, and also by the continuous tunnels created by hundreds of torii gates at the Fushimi Inari Shrine, also in Kyoto. Since a direct transference of either pattern has insufficient variety I added a sense of depth, creating this impression with "over and under" alternate stopping and continuing strips. Since that was done by piecing rather than applique, it required very complicated planning. |
