Description

Title: Listening to Colors

Year Completed: 1996

Size: H83” × W62” / H211 cm × W158 cm

Material: old cotton, new cotoon (American hand-painted, American and Japanese hand-dyed), old silk (haori, kimono), upholstery fabric (Japan, America, Holland, England, India)

Statement: During the Heian period (from 794) elegant courtesans were said to have dressed themselves in kimono with twelve layers of cloth of slightly different lengths, to that the ends (sleeves or trailers) would show small portions of each layer, not necessarily of equal size. This image forms the basis for the design. Even with subdued colors, the variety gives a rather cheerful aspect.
