DescriptionTitle: An Outsider Year Completed: 1989 Size: H75” × W56.5” / H191 cm × W144 cm Material: old cotton (noren, kimono), new cotton (japan, America, India) Statement: The year before we saw an exhibition of art by the painter Friedlander in Goslar, Germany. He was not from that city; at that time he was living in Paris, and must have felt like an outsider at least at first. And for me the same feeling, as a Japanese living in America, seeing this art in Europe. This was the first time that I felt a deep appreciation for abstract art. |
