Statement: When I made this quilt, I had not seen Spring in Japan for fifteen years. In recalling what Spring in Japan was like, I thought of the peak of the cherry-blossom season, when the trees are in full bloom and the fallen petals are scattered like a carpet on the ground. I intended to create the sense that the area comprising all the tiny squares (including Meiji-period obi, my grandmother's kimonos, marbled fabric which my friend hand-dyed, and Indian batik shirts) is a single unitary color, and the dark blue fabrics a single background.
