DescriptionTitle: Secret Fire Year Completed: 1987 Size: H90” × W67.5” / H228 cm × W172 cm Material: old cotton (aizome, kusakizome, akanezome, sarasa), new cotton (Japan) The akanezome fabric used in this quilt has faded considerably over the years (Please see the note for the preceding quilt, Oral Tradition) Statement: With this quilt I departed from the tradition of using single established pattern blocks, replicated as many times as the design required. Although this quilt and later ones do use traditional patterns, I never again used them in a straightforward traditional manner. Most of this quilt was machine-pieced, but I found it easier to do the gray area by hand (probably not true now). The patterns I used all exist traditionally in both Japan and the U.S. |
