Description

Title: Fragrant Autumn Flower

Year Completed: 1994

Size: H36” × W36” / H91 cm × W91 cm

Material: old cotton (aizome), new cotton (American and Japanese hand-dyed, commercial), upholstery fabric

Statement: This quilt was made for the first exhibition of one square yard quilts by the Manhattan Quilters' Guild. We were each required to make a quilt related to a haiku poem (not necessarily by anyone famous). I chose a poem by my mother:

In a garden at dusk
a faint fragrance
kinmokusei

Although in actuality the design consists entirely of straight lines, the placement of light-colored shapes creates a feeling of gentle curves appropriate to a flower image.
