Description

Title: Private Celebration

Year Completed: 1992

Size: H75” × W56.5” / H190 cm × W143 cm

Material: old cotton (aizome), new cotton (American hand-dyed)

Statement: Previously I had used pink fabric to some extent in Warmth of Heart and in concealed Life. THis is a very difficult color to use effectively, and by this time I felt pleasure in combining it with other fabrics. In Norway we saw some particularly vivid sunsets from tops of small mountains, combinations of purple and pink which we can not recall seeing elsewhere. In this quilt the gradated curved shape thus signifies the West (more specifically my husband) and the curved checkerboard represents Japanese colors (actually myself); the two are entwined in celebration.
